Do you remember the scene in the Will Smith movie The Pursuit of Happyness where he looks at a hedge fund manager driving a Ferrari and asks him "Man, I just need to ask you what it is you do and how do you do it!"? Most people looking at their average paying jobs, wonder what kind of jobs they would prefer to have landed themselves instead - the ones that make six figures a year. The highest paying jobs in the world are not easy to get and simply aren't easy to do. It requires a top-flight education, dedicated work, constant re-education and long hours put inr. It also requires a killer instinct. The highest paying jobs in the country are in finance, in sales, and of course, in medicine.
Would it surprise you to learn that the healthcare industry contains the largest numbers of the highest paying jobs there are? It isn't general medicine that pays the highest either, and med students know this. They head out for the specialties in dentistry or pediatrics to be able to make six figure incomes. An OB/GYN for instance, averages around a quarter million dollars a year; an anesthetist makes even more. A psychiatrist (yes, you are allowed to call them 'shrink' to show your scorn) makes around $200,000 a year. About the most promising gig you can find in a medicine lies in dentistry. Once a dentist starts his own practice, he commands an enviable salary that is completely recession proof. People just can't put off getting dental work done, so badly does it hurt.
As difficult as it may be to believe, some of the highest paying jobs in the country reside in sales. Businesses pay the most generous packages to those in sales, because their entire business model depends on getting products out the door. Without a motivated sales force, there is no way to leave a recession and to enter a boom - no matter what area of business you look at - cars, insurance, real estate. A successful sales director can make nearly quarter million dollars a year.
There is one last area where high-paying jobs reside - technology. In engineering firms, managerial positions can command anything above $100,000 a year. A software engineer in the upper echelons of his company and placed to accept responsibility for more than one development team can, with a few years under his belt, command salaries that are even higher. Of course, working this way and commanding salaries like these requires that you put in work. And it requires that you have no life outside of your work. If your work is your entire life, you certainly can get the price you ask for.
